Add Books with Open Library Auto-Fill

Type a title or ISBN — the rest fills itself in

Adding a book to Owlect starts with a single field: the title, the author, or the ISBN. As you type, Owlect searches Open Library and shows matching editions with their covers. Pick the right one and the author, ISBN, publisher, first-publish year, page count, and cover image drop into the new item for you — so each book you add is complete without typing a single field by hand. It is the fastest way to catalog a shelf one spine at a time.

How it works

  1. Open your Books collection and add an item

Sign in to Owlect, open a Books collection, and tap “Add Item”. The name field doubles as a search box — there is nothing extra to enable, because Open Library lookup is built into every Books collection.

  2. Search by title, author, or ISBN

Start typing the title or author — or paste a 10- or 13-digit ISBN for an exact edition. After three characters Owlect queries Open Library and lists matches, each with its cover thumbnail and publish year so you can tell editions apart at a glance.

  3. Pick the right edition

Tap the match you own. Owlect reads that record and auto-fills the author, ISBN, publisher, first-publish year, page count, and cover image — the cover becomes the item’s photo automatically.

  4. Adjust and save

Set anything Open Library does not know — format (hardcover, paperback, eBook, audiobook), genre, or whether you have read it — then save. Repeat for the next book; covers you upload yourself are never overwritten.

What gets imported

These fields auto-fill from the Open Library record the moment you pick a match — format, genre, and read status stay yours to set.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add a book by scanning or typing its ISBN?

Yes. Paste a 10- or 13-digit ISBN into the search field and Owlect looks up that exact edition on Open Library, then fills in the author, publisher, year, page count, and cover. Searching by title or author works too when you do not have the barcode handy.

Which book details does Owlect fill in automatically?

When you pick a match, Owlect auto-fills the author, ISBN, publisher, first-publish year, page count, and cover image. Format, genre, and read status are not in the Open Library record, so you set those yourself — they take a couple of taps.

Where does the book data come from?

From Open Library, the open book database run by the Internet Archive. There is no account to connect and no API key to paste — lookup works straight from the add-item screen on any Books collection.

What if a book is not in Open Library?

Rare, self-published, or very new titles are occasionally missing. When that happens you can still add the book by typing the fields yourself and uploading your own cover photo — nothing about the manual flow changes.

Do I have to add books one at a time?

Auto-fill is per book, so each title is one search and one tap. If you already keep your library in a spreadsheet or a Goodreads export, the CSV import brings the whole list in at once instead.
