Add Watches with TheWatchAPI Auto-Fill

Search a brand and model — the specs fill in

Add a watch by typing its brand and model, and Owlect searches TheWatchAPI as you go, listing matches with the reference number, movement, and case material in the subtitle. Pick the watch you own and the brand, model, reference, year, case material, case size, and movement fill in for you — so each timepiece you add is identified precisely without typing every spec by hand. TheWatchAPI does not carry photos, so a wrist shot or macro photo is yours to add.

How it works

  1. Open your Watches collection and add a watch

Sign in to Owlect, open a Watches collection, and tap “Add Item”. The name field is the search box — lookup is built in, with no key to paste and no account to connect.

  2. Search by brand and model

Type the brand and model — Seiko SKX, say, or Omega Speedmaster. After three characters Owlect queries TheWatchAPI and lists matches, each showing the reference number, movement, and case material so you can pick the exact variant.

  3. Pick the reference you own

Tap your watch. Owlect auto-fills the brand, model, reference, year, case material, case size, and movement (Automatic, Manual, Quartz, or Solar) in one go.

  4. Add your own photo and save

TheWatchAPI does not provide images, so upload a wrist shot or macro photo of your watch. Record the purchase price if you track value, then save and search for the next piece.

What gets imported

These fill from TheWatchAPI's record when you pick a match — the photo and purchase price stay yours to add.

Frequently asked questions

Which watch details fill in automatically?

Picking a match auto-fills the brand, model, reference number, year, case material, case size, and movement type. The watch image is not part of the lookup, so you upload your own photo.

Does Owlect add a photo of the watch?

No — TheWatchAPI does not carry watch images, so the photo is the one thing you add yourself. A wrist shot or a macro of the dial makes your collection look like a watch box rather than a spec sheet.

Which movement types can it record?

The Movement field maps the lookup result to Automatic, Manual, Quartz, or Solar. If the database lists a movement Owlect doesn’t recognize, you set it yourself from those options.

What if a reference is not in TheWatchAPI?

Coverage is strongest for popular brands, so a rare or vintage reference can be missing. When it is, add the watch by typing the brand, model, reference, and case details yourself and uploading your own photo.

Can I track the value of my watches?

Yes. Each watch has a Purchase Price field that you fill in — the lookup never touches it — and the table view shows every value at a glance.
